After two years, Mr. Zhu Pu, our super idol, came to visit WFL again. Mr. Zhu first guided the English teachers to carry out a teaching and research activity to explore the thematic meaning of the overall unit. Later, Mr. Zhu gave an interesting and informative lecture on blackboard design to all WFL teachers.
Yesterday morning, Mr. Zhu and all the English teachers carefully observed two wonderful classes given by Aaron and Vennie. Then, under the guidance of Mr. Zhu, the English teachers carried out a teaching and research activity to explore the thematic meaning of the overall unit. During the activity, Mr. Zhu first expressed his appreciation for the two teachers’ classes and the well implementation of the overall design of the unit. At the same time, Mr. Zhu put forward a higher requirement for the English teachers, to teach by focusing on the thematic meaning and the contents, to provide students with real-life learning materials and an immersive learning environment. Thus, we can eventually realize the goal of educating students.
In the afternoon, Mr. Zhu gave another wonderful lecture on blackboard design based on the unit’s content. Mr. Zhu focused on explaining the six functions of blackboard design and how teachers should design it. Basically, the blackboard design presents the core learning contents, the scaffolding of the tasks, the basic learning process, the logical order of the content, the main learning strategies or the overall connection of the unit. The fun and informative lecture won a lot of applause from the teachers.
The seemingly easy task of blackboard design actually has a crucial impact on the teaching effectiveness. Scientific, concise, and easy-to-understand blackboard design can bring students better learning experiences and learning outcomes. Although Mr. Zhu mainly took the blackboard design in English classes as an example, teachers of other subjects expressed that they benefited a lot too. Some teachers even immediately applied it to the blackboard design of the upcoming teaching competition.
As a structured learning content and a visualized thinking tool, the rationality of blackboard design reflects the logicality of thinking and determines the effectiveness of teaching. Mr. Zhu once again used his humorous and easy-to-understand language to bring a wonderful and informative lecture to our teachers. We still have a long way to go, but we are already on the way, on a promising way.
