For many Chinese students, bilingual education means growing up in a Chinese and English environment. About this, parents often have a lot of questions:

What kind of bilingual education is good for children’s development? How AISL Harrow Schools balance Chinese culture and global perspectives in their teaching? As a parent, how should you communicate with children in everyday life?

From research scientist to Chief Education officer - Confidence and strength built over time

Dr. Ahmed Hussain何迈德博士为英国杜伦大学教育学院副教授，曾先后于英国、阿联酋和中国担任学校领导和大学研究一职，在领导国际学校集团和教育改革方面饶富经验。从研究科学家到首席教育官，何迈德博士一直在路上。

在一次偶然的科学教育的活动中，何迈德博士发现了自己的教育才能。没过多久，他就凭借个人的努力扭转了一所市中心学校的下滑局面。后来，他开始有机会影响英国各地的评估和公开考试。并作为阿联酋教育部长的顾问，负责制定和实施相关的专业标准。

教育意味着机会，而教育工作者在塑造儿童的未来，以及他们对世界的影响方面发挥着重要作用。

对教育挑战的追求逐渐将何迈德博士从英国带到迪拜，在参与了阿布扎比的一个教育改革项目并为整个阿联酋的教育工作者制定了专业标准之后，这位热心的教育家又来到了中国。8个月前，何迈德博士加入了哈罗大家庭。

我对教育充满热情，不仅仅是因为它可以影响学校里的人的生活；更是因为它可能会影响学校以外的教育改革，而这正是我们正在努力的方向。

Dr Ahmed Hussain was appointed Associate Professor in the School of Education at Durham University. He has a rich experience in leadership of international school groups and education reform. Prior to joining the Group, Dr. Hussain had held school leadership and university research positions in England, UAE and China.

As Chief Education Officer, Dr. Hussain didn’t come into education in a typical way. He first found the importance of education as a research scientist and lecturer. Then he chose to go into a failing inner-city school to turn it around. Eventually, he had an opportunity to influence assessment and public examinations across the UK and then later as an adviser to the Minister of Education in the UAE on developing and implementing professional standards.

Education provides opportunities.

As educators, we play a fundamental role in shaping children’s opportunities and their impact on the world.

The pursuit of educational challenges gradually took Dr. Hussain from the UK to Dubai, where he worked on an education reform project in Abu Dhabi. Then, the ardent educator found himself in China. Eight months ago, Dr. Ahmed Hussain joined the Harrow family.

I became passionate about education not just because it could influence the lives of those in the school; it could also influence education reform beyond, and that’s what we are working on.

02扎根中国，双检保质，做真正融合的双语教育

Chinese-centred curriculum and comprehensive quality assurance framework for pioneering bilingual education

双语教育，如何避免孩子变成“香蕉人”？

哈罗的双语教育，始终立足于中国本土，让孩子无论是在价值观培育还是知识积累，都浸润在中国文化精髓的滋养中。何迈德博士透露，双语教育模式是他所热衷的领域，而哈罗的双语教育课程也由他主导构建。以中国九年义务教育教学大纲为核心，课程要求严谨，为学生构建反映中国历史、遗产和文化的身份所需的基础。同时引入西方渐进式全人学习模式和发展精髓，培养学生们在技术、文化和社会层面上的双语思维，从而更全面的思考问题、解决问题。

为学生提供真正的中国双语教育，允许并促进学生对他们的历史、文化、语言和传统产生热情。

传统文化和国际视野，孰轻孰重，如何平衡？

哈罗的双语教育植根于中国深厚传统文化底蕴，期以实现学生们对“中国人”这一身份的深刻理解与认同，从而让学生们站在自己所生长的文化语境看世界，反思社会，反思全球。同时，作为认知的边界，熟练运用英语是掌握国际视野的基本条件。哈罗的语言学习过程经过精心的规划，密切追踪学生进度，从幼教到高中阶段始终朝着获取国际资格认证的目标迈进。

许多研究表明，只有具备强烈的本土文化认同感，才能真正理解和融入其他文化，如果人们有很强的认同感，他们就会愿意学习和欣赏其他文化的差异。

做跨文化的融合教育，哈罗如何保证质量？

何迈德博士通过与哈罗校长、其他教师的密切合作，致力于为哈罗的学生提供优质的成长环境。此外，何迈德博士还强调了将研究成果付诸实践的重要性。

简短而快速的问题，孩子们的积极性往往并不高。但如果我们给学生一个机会，让他们与同伴合作完成一个开放式的问题，他们的参与程度就会提高。这很吸引人。

吸引和激励学生只是何迈德博士领导的质量保证框架中的冰山一角。哈罗通过英国海外学校协会（BSO）检查和HISL教育督导视察（HEOV）来对哈罗的教学质量进行外部评估，同时通过治理报告、进度评估、绩效表现、数据分析，以及AISL教育团队领导的学校访查，持续实现对哈罗标准的内部质量审查。

On bilingual education: how not to foster children who are “yellow on the outside and white on the inside”?

Harrow’s bilingual education has always been rooted in Chinese education, immerse children in a Chinese culture environment. The Chief Education Officer reveals a bilingual education model is an area Dr. Hussain is passionate about. Based on the nine years compulsory education syllabi for China, he leads the building of Harrow’s bilingual education model. It delivers a genuine Chinese education, one that promotes and allows students to develop a passion for their history, culture, language, and their traditions. Also, we draw on the best of progressive and holistic approaches to learning and development synonymous with Harrow the Harrow name. Fostering bilingual thinking at the technical, cultural and social levels so that students can think and solve problems in a more holistic way.

We deliver a genuine Chinese education, one that promotes and allows students to develop a passion for their history, culture, language, and their traditions.

Which one is more important, traditional culture or global perspectives?

And how to balance?

Our curriculum is designed to deepen students' understanding and recognition of their Chinese identity, so that students can navigate the world and reflect on their own society and the world from the cultural context in which they grew up. On the other hand, English proficiency opens the doors to the world. Harrow’s language acquisition is carefully planned, and students' progress is tracked. Progression towards international qualifications is secured from Early Years through to High School.

A lot of studies indicate that you need a strong sense of identity to be able to understand and engage with other cultures. If people have a very strong sense of identity, they are willing to learn and appreciate the differences in other cultures.

How to assure the quality of cross-cultural education?

Leading our quality assurance endeavour, Dr. Hussain works closely with Headmasters/ mistresses and their teams across AISL Harrow Schools to create conditions for our students to thrive. Besides, Dr. Hussain stresses the importance of research and putting research findings into practice.

Short and quick questions, do not engage children deeply. But if we give students an opportunity to collaborate with their peers on an open ended question,their engagement level increases. This is fascinating.

Engaging and motivating students is merely the tip of an iceberg in the quality assurance framework Dr. Hussain leads on. There are two dimensions: external evaluation and internal quality assurance. External evaluation has two aspects: British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspections and HISL Educational Inspectorate Visits (HEOV). While internal quality assurance is achieved on an ongoing basis through governance reports, progress assessments, performance, data analysis, and school visits led by the AISL education team.
