Writing is not a collection of words or a simple superposition of materials, but a type of thinking activity. At SUIS JKEMW, our Chinese teachers try to create an authentic writing scene for students, and cultivate students' thinking ability such as cognitive understanding, analysis and evaluation, and comprehensive application. These abilities will help students build confidence in writing and help them better utilize writing to communicate with the world.
The world has infinite number of objects in all shapes and forms. How to write scenery uniquely and vividly?
Students in Grade 8 had a scenery writing practice. Firstly, students learnt how to observe a scene in different ways, such as view it in distance, closely, upwardly, downwardly, and describe the scene in particular orders. For instance, the tracking of writers and timing sequence. Secondly, students need to learn how to use multiple senses, such as sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Thirdly, learning how to use different writing techniques to vividly describe the scene is also very essential. For instance, the combination of dynamic and static, association and imagination, rhetoric, and colour description. Finally, always remember to blend the feeling in the scene, and let the readers feel the happiness, sadness, depression, or annoyance behind the scenes. The scenery writing will be appealing with the scenery depicted and the emotions expressed in perfect harmony.
Generally, in the first Chinese writing class, I will teach students what we are going to learn from the writing, and what is different from the writing class in elementary school. I will then lead them to find the core of writing through analyzing the writing task.
After knowing what the writing is about, an outline should be made. I will figure out a scene to let students act out and teach them how to use language to clearly describe the acting, as using a more detailed description will make the expression more vivid.
Under the inspiration and guidance of the teacher, all kinds of writing materials will emerge from the students’ minds. I will then take on the role as a tailor who will tell them how to use those materials to make their "new clothes".
An outline is essential in writing. With the help of teachers, students write the outline combined with their own materials and ideas. 当然，有了好的大纲不是一定就能写出完美的文章。于是，第一稿有点惨。
A good outline does not always lead to a perfect piece of writing. Therefore, the first draft still needs some improvement.
It is difficult to get it right the first time. Hence, the second writing class is the key. I will read out some of the writings that need to be improved, analyze them, and help students improve them. Then, it is no coincidence that a good article can be produced at the second time.
Now we already have several little writing analysts in our class, and whenever I read a writing that does not meet the requirements, they can explain and analyze the shortcomings of the writing and help their classmates correct it.
Narrative is for conveying emotions and sharing experience, and it is the fundamental ability in writing. Developing the skill of writing good narratives needs students to deeply feel the emotions and practice it repeatedly. Then how to write emotionally?
Students in Grade 7 gained writing experience through analyzing previous articles learned in class and ultimately finishing a writing piece that is clear, specific, and emotional.
To write specifically, students need to remember the six elements in narrative, set up clues and use foreshadowing. They can also change the order of narrative to impress readers. Moreover, students learned how to highlight the central theme in detail and briefly write about the rest of the article, and use environmental description and character description to write vividly and specifically. At last, students need to remember that when they are writing narratives, always record the true story and the real feeling, so that their writing will be genuine and appealing.
At SUIS JKEMW, we consistently aim to deliver an 'East meets West' and student-oriented education. We strive to help our students have excellent language ability and high-level thinking ability through the Chinese Curriculum. As a result, they finally grow into future talents with both global visions and profound Chinese culture.
