This year, BRS’s course case named “What is Machine Learning”, designed by BRS teacher Ms. Xin Lirong, was awarded the Outstanding National Course Case of the first stage of the "Practical Research Project on Artificial Intelligence Education in Primary and Secondary Schools". Distinguished from 17 experimental zones and 193 schools nationwide, this awarded course representing Beijing Royal School was also presented at the Education Forum of World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2022.
Giving an emphasis to inquiry-based approach, Ms. Xin Lirong led his students on a journey of exploration of machine learning through creating scenarios. In the learning process, students gained a better understanding of the importance of data in machine learning, as well as why machine learning plays a critical role in AI curriculum.
For many years, BRS has focused on cultivating and improving students’ scientific literacy, the education for Artificial Intelligence in particular. Many different resources and platforms have been used to inspire students’ discovery and innovation in the world of science. Approaches to learning include: enhancing the school’s research-based teaching; introducing advanced resources; creating rich school-based electives courses, such as establishing BRS Maker’s Lab, Python programming, AI programming, Model car, VEX IQ robot, STEM, electronic circuit course, and Lego robot programming, just to name a few.
By implementing the scientific teaching approach, BRS has also attached importance on enhancing our students’ innovative consciousness and scientific application skills. This teaching approach builds a real academic atmosphere for innovative scientific discovery on campus. Many BRS students including Liu Yifei, Wang Cankun, Zhou Zhe and Zhao Junjie, have seen amazing academic growth in their AI learning by participating in projects such as "AI Face Recognition and Tracking", "Robot that Throws Balls", "Brain CT Assisted Analysis Tool", "Beijing Epidemic Analysis and Prediction in April” and others.
