We are going to begin by looking at the early years foundation stage, Harrow Little Lions. We focus on developing resilience, independence, confidence and self discipline. Our students will develop essential, creative and critical thinking skills.
After Harrow Little Lions, students join Grade 1. We make it a safe, warm learning place. Students sit in small groups, they can be coached individually and everything in the classroom is designed to make them feel safe in their learning space and to support their learning and develop learning behaviors.
Assessment at Harrow is ongoing, to ensure that it can be used to evaluate, plan and prepare for individual student learning. We use the GSE 3 times a year, which is an external standardized measurement of English progress. We also have Writing Portfolios, Start and end of unit/topic assessments in subjects, and End of Term Assessments/examinations.
In lessons, teachers carry out ongoing assessment and we make use of self and peer assessment. We assess each child's writing level and differentiate the learning to ensure that every child makes progress and can access learning at their own level. Our teachers are experienced, they are successful practitioners, but also very caring positive teachers. In Upper School, because the text is complex, teachers use many different methods to help students understand the text; In Lower School, we also have bilingual communication partners in every classroom.
What we want to do is to build a love of reading. We encourage the children to read Chinese books and English books. We also encourage them to become authors and to write their own stories. We disassemble complex texts through pictures, stories, etc. to help students read longer English novels so that they can understand the text. We also do a lot of role play so that students can understand characters and how characters will act and feel. It also helps them to be more confident. In speaking in English, we help students retell stories. This develops accuracy in both their speech and writing.
Homework at Harrow Chongqing serves 2 purposes: to prepare students for learning - flipped homework, and to reinforce learning. Students are encouraged to read daily both in Chinese and English. As well as books and magazines, we also have online reading resources in English - Active Learning and Language Nut. In Lower School, all homework is set on SeeSaw. In Upper School, there is more homework. Homework is set by subject teachers on Teams and also recorded by the students in the student binder.
