陈文国总校长在期末教师总结会议上的讲话Words from Mr. Bowen Chen for the Faculty

今天我想从三个层面来谈谈我的一些想法:

Today, I’d like to talk about some of my ideas from the following three aspects:

一是从大的局面来看。大家都知道,近期国家出台了民促法的具体落实方案。对于资本大举进入教育行业的整顿,以及要理顺真民办,还是假民办,对教培行业的整顿,我想其目的是要把孩子从只顾学习,过度紧张的学业压力,拉回到孩子自然生长的状态。更加注重孩子的身心健康,更加注重孩子的全面素质的提升。因为这是关系到我们国家二十年,三十年以后,我们现在这一代的孩子将成为我们中国未来建设的中坚力量,如果我们不从现在就关注到这个问题,那么将来就会出现很多的问题。现在的教育从某种情况程度上讲是工业化时代的产物,它是适合于从农业社会进入工业社会,促进工业社会进一步发展的需要而产生的。因此,现代的教育体系对于近300年来我们工业化社会的发展起了很大的作用。但是现在又到了一个时代巨变的时刻,原有的教育的体系已经不能适合于未来的社会的发展的需求了,因此必须在教育方面做彻底的变革。
Firstly, let’s look at the overall situation.  As we all know, our state recently introduced a concrete implementation plan for the non-govermental education promotion law.  In my opinion, the purpose of the rectification of capital's pouring into the education industry, as well as the rectification of educational and training institutes, like true or fake private schools, is to pull the children back to a state of natural growth from the over-intense academic pressure, and to pay more attention to the physical and mental health of children and the improvement of children's overall quality and skills. This is essential to our country's future in twenty or thirty years. Our present generation of children will become the backbone of the future construction of China. If we don't pay attention to this problem from now on, then there will be a lot of problems in the future. To some extent, the present education is the product of the industrial age, which is suitable for the transition from an agricultural society to an industrial society to promote the further development of the industrial society.  Therefore, the modern educational system has contributed greatly to the development of our industrial society in the last 300 years.  But now we are at a time of great changes. The original education system can no longer meet the needs of the future social development.Therefore, we must make a thorough reform in education.  

那么如何做一些变革呢,实际上这个我们还是从教育的本质,它的本源来看。我们做教育的人,实际上,应该要从哲学思维来多思考一些教育的问题。我们的教育先驱孔老夫子早就说过,教育应该有教无类,因材施教。按照每个孩子的不同的个性,运用适合于每一个人的教育方法,这样才能够真正起到教育作用,培养出对社会有用的人才。心学创始人王阳明先生,知行合一,也就是让我们的教育要与实际的生活相结合,我们的教育要用来解决实际的问题,学以致用。美国教育家杜威提出了实用主义理论,教育即生活、教育即生长、教育即经验。以学生为中心,学校的所有的一些活动都应该回绕我们的孩子来进行。实际上中外在哲学层面来讲,对于真正的教育的思考,在理念上是一致的,而且如果真正的从教育的本质来做教育,其实对于未来的社会也是非常有效的。我们来看看民国时期的教育,在那个时候,整个教育环境让一大批的孩子成为了我们大家都非常熟悉的,对我们中国产生了巨大作用的一些大师。胡适和陶行知(他的本名不叫陶行知,因为他非常崇尚王阳明先生的心学,所以他把名字改成了陶行知。)都是杜威的学生。他们具有我们中国文化的深厚的底蕴,所以有效地把中西方教育理念相融合,创设了一个非常适合于孩子们发展的环境。联系到目前我们做国际化教育,其实我们应该是在探索什么是真正的教育,或者什么是优质的教育,什么是最适合于我们孩子能够去迎接未来的教育。

So how do we do that? We need to look at the nature of education and the origin of education. As educators, in fact, we should think more about education from a philosophical perspective. Confucius, our educational pioneer, said long ago that education should be taught according to one's aptitude and interest.  According to the different personality of each child, we should adopt differentiated methods, so as to cultivate a useful talent for society.  Mr. Wang Yangming, founder of the study of mind, said that knowledge and practice should be one, that is, our education should be combined with real life. Our education should be used to solve practical problems, to apply what we have learned into practice.  American educator John Dewey put forward a pragmatic philosophy on education: "Education is life; Education is growth; Education is experience. All school activities should be carried out in a student-centered manner."  In fact, in terms of philosophy, China and foreign countries share the same thoughts on true education. Moreover, if education is really carried out observing the essence of education, it will also be very effective for the future society.  Let's take a look at the education during the period of the Republic of China. At that time, the whole educational environment allowed a large number of children to become masters that we are all very familiar with and had a great impact on our country.  Famous educators Hu Shi and Tao Xingzhi (his real name was not Tao Xingzhi; since he admired Wang Yangming's philosophy so much that he changed his name to Tao Xingzhi) are both John Dewy's students. Both of them knew about China and its profound culture, and both of them had studied in the USA, so they effctively integrated the educational philosophy and methods of China and the West to create a very suitable environment for the development of talents. With regard to our current internationalized education, we should be exploring what true education means, or what is high-quality education, and what is the most suitable education for our children to prepare for the future.  

因此其二,我们的学校,或者我们的学习社区怎样去营造更加适合于我们孩子发展的环境呢?无论教育模式和场景如何改变,是暂时还是时代的演进,教育的本质和教育的意义,千年来从来未被改变和颠覆。教育应遵循古人之:育人为本,德育为先。我们不应该因办学,导致学生们掉进中式和西洋考试的泥潭,进入应试的让知识僵化的牢笼,而应该将知识用于修身、做人,用于齐家和治国。所以我们学校倡导合适的教育就是最好的教育,因为每个孩子都有自己的闪光点,只有想方设法将每个孩子的潜能挖掘出来,加以引导和发扬光大,帮助孩子成长,这才叫做真正的教育,才符合未来教育发展的趋势。我们应该为我们现在在做的事情感到骄傲。我们学校制定的个性化的课程体系,根据每一个学生为他们量身定制进行分层教育,每一个学生都有合适于他们的课程,彻底的走班制课程对孩子非常有利,从知识的传授,到教学活动的展开,全部进行上下左右全维度打通。孩子不是固定在某个班级,而是按照他们的能力分布在不同的班级里,让他们真正做到扬长避短。在强项方面,让孩子自主选择学习更具挑战的课程。而薄弱的方面,则通过引导来确定学习目标。这样的走班制,可以让孩子的学习情绪、心态形成良性循环,以兴趣点出发去自主学习,在学习中获得愉悦感,甚至养成对学习的热爱。
So secondly, as a school or a learning community, how can we create an environment that is suitable for our children's development? No matter how the mode and scene of education changes, temporarily or with the evolution of the times, the essence and significance of education have never been changed and overturned in the past thousand years. We should learn from our ancestors: we should focus on the education of a whole person and the educatio of virtues should go first.  We should not let the students fall into the mire of Chinese and western examinations and get into the cage of rigid knowledge. Instead, we should use knowledge to cultivate one's virtues, to encourage good counducts, to manage the family, and govern the country.  Therefore, our school advocates that the fittest education is the best education, because every child has his or her own shining points. Only by trying every means to bring out every child's potential, guide it, and make it grow can we call it true education, which is in line with the trend of future education development.  We should be proud of what we are doing.  The personalized curriculum system developed by our school provides suitable education for each student, and each student has a course suitable for them. The thorough class-based curriculum is very beneficial to children. From the imparting of knowledge to the development of teaching activities, all of the above and the right dimensions are connected. Children are not fixed in a class; instead, they should be distributed to different classes according to their ability, so that they can really take advantage of their strengths and aviod their weaknesses.  In terms of strength, we can support children to choose more challenging courses. In their weak areas, we can help them make reasonable goals through guidance.  Such a curricula system can make children's learning emotions and mentality form a virtuous circle. They can start from the point of interest to learn independently, get a sense of pleasure in learning, and may even start to love learning.

在孩童时代的引导,学校和老师担任着非常重要的角色。让我们的孩子激发对学习的热爱,从以前的被动学习转化为主动学习,并且学以致用,让孩子自主、自发地乐于通过学习去探索未知的世界。我们要非常关注一个孩子是否对一个他感兴趣的事情很坚持,或者很擅长。如果我们发现一个孩子对他专长、擅长、喜爱的事情,非常具有耐力和持久性,甚至他愿意一辈子都研究下去,我们要非常珍惜具有这种品质的人,我们要尊重他的兴趣、爱好,鼓励他坚持。因为,这对于培养一个创新人才非常重要!如果一个人能够一辈子专注于一件事,把他的个性、潜能全部发挥出来,那么,这个人会很容易做出成绩或成就。比如:以色列就是这样一个国家,人口基数在全世界来说很小,但获得诺贝尔奖的人数却占据全世界百分之三十。鼓励孩子自主探究世界,真正让孩子在兴趣爱好方向不断发展,对未来整个社会的发展和个体的发展都是极其有利的。
 Schools and teachers play a very important role in the guidance of children. Let's inspire our children to love learning, change their passive learning into active learning, and apply what they learn into practice. Let's inspire the children to explore the unknown world through learning autonomously and spontaneously.  We need to pay a lot of attention to whether a child is persistent or good at something he is interested in.  If we find a child who is interested in something and is willing to put lots of time on it, we should cherish them and respect his hobbies and encourage him to persist in this field. It is very important to cultivate an innovative talent!  If one can concentrate on one thing all his life and bring out all his personality and potential, he will make big achievements.  For example, Israel, boasting 30 percent of the Nobel Prize winners in the world, is a country with a very small population.  Encouraging children to explore the world independently and truly allowing children to continue to develop in the direction of interests and hobbies are extremely beneficial to the development of the whole society and individual in the future.  ​​​​​​​

第三我想聊聊国际学校的老师。我们首先要在这一点上达成一个团队的共识,那就是:对孩子充满热爱。我们上海中学老校长叶克平先生曾说:没有对孩子的爱,就没有教育。只有真正地爱孩子,他们才能无怨无悔地付出。例如:针对不同学生的特点,去研究学生的学习习惯、学习心态和个性化差异,然后,为孩子设计并提供适合这种差异的教育,这都是要付出相当的艰辛和精力的。值得庆幸的是我们的付出取得了很好的教学成果。作为一名教师,自己要不断地接受新事物,不断要去进行文化的熏陶。你只有自己的思想境界不断提升和知识扎实了,业务能力不断精进了,才能更好地去教书育人。作为教师,对问题的深究和对学术的钻研,以及对未知的探索,必将激发我们整个团队去用自身的实践和思考去解决问题。我们所有人,应该从教育理念,教育框架、课程设置、组织教学、学生特点等各个方面,由宏观到微观,由高处向低处,由大及小的一点点去做比较、分析和研究。在这个探索与发现、研究与对比的过程中,我们将不断地学习,进行大量的探索和实践,从而让自己对教育有更深层次的理解。同时,我们在做教育的过程中间,让自己有一个愉悦的心情。

Finally, I'd like to talk about teachers in international schools.  The first thing we need to agree on as a team is that we love our children.  Mr. Ye Keping, the former principal of Shanghai High School, once said: "Without love for children, there would be no education. " Only by truly loving children can they dedicate themselves without complaining.  For example, it takes a lot of hard work and energy to study students' learning habits, learning mentality, and individual differences according to the characteristics of different students, and then to design and provide education suitable for each child. Fortunately, our efforts have achieved good results.  As teachers, we must constantly accept new things and keep learning. Only when we keep updating ourselves can we teach better.  As teachers, our research into problems and academics and our exploration of the unknown will definitely inspire our whole team to solve the problem with our own practice and thinking.  All of us should compare, analyze and study from the macro to the micro level, from the high to the low, from the big to the small, the educational ideology, the educational framework, the curriculum setting, the organization of teaching, the characteristics of students and so on.  In this process of exploration and discovery, research and comparison, we will continue to learn, carry out a lot of exploration and practice, so as to let ourselves have a deeper understanding of education. Meanwhile, we should find joy in working as educators, too.
